Swedish massage has been described as "the manipulation of the soft tissue for therapeutic purposes".

Swedish massage is an aid to circulation, which can help to improve the flexibility of joints, increasing their range of motion. Muscle tone is often improved as a result, with waste products present in the muscles being eliminated.

Increased circulation also delivers an increased oxygen supply to the cells of the body; this can speed up metabolism and lead to healthier cell function.

Benefits of Swedish Massage are:
  • Decreased stress and muscle tension
  • Improved range of motion
  • Increased circulation
  • Mental and physical relaxation
  • Loosening of tight muscles and connective tissues
  • Lymphatic drainage
  • Speedier healing rate from injury

Your Questions Answered

How does this differ from an Aromatherapy Massage?

A Swedish Massage (otherwise known as Therapeutic Massage) is normally more vigorous than an Aromatherapy Massage which tends to rely more on the blend of essential oils than the actual manipulation of soft tissue.

Could I still have an essential oil blend with a Swedish Massage?

Yes, you can. There is no reason for Aromatherapy essential oils not to be used during a Swedish Massage. Many people like to feel the physical benefit of deeper manipulation but the incorporation of a good aromatherapy blend could also stimulate the mind and emotions.
